Simulating phosphorus dynamics with Stics

The article by Seghouani et al. (2025) describes the adaptation of the Stics crop model to phosphorus uptake. It includes soil phosphorus availability, phosphorus demand by the crop, phosphorus uptake by the roots, phosphorus partitioning and the effects of phosphorus shortage on plant growth.

The adapted model was evaluated on experimental data from several maize-growing sites in temperate climates with different phosphorus availability. The evaluation showed that the adapted Stics model simulates the effects of phosphorus treatments on biomass production, as well as on phosphorus accumulation and partitioning. The model opens up new prospects for defining phosphorus fertilisation strategies.
