A new release of STICS et de JavaSTICS is available

The latest software distribution STICS v11.0.0 and JavaSTICS 11.0.0 is downloadable

This major release focuses on formalisms improvement about simulating bi specific intercropping.

Highlights

  • Light interception in intercrops: improved radiative transfer (2.5D canopy geometry), and a new Beer-Lambert option for well-mixed canopies.
  • Strip intercropping: new code_strip option, with the number of rows per strip (nrow) set in the crop management file.
  • Plant height: it can now be computed from plant development, accounting for water and nitrogen stress and for shade-induced elongation.
  • Density effects extended to intercrops (shoot and root growth).
  • Nitrogen demand in intercrops based on an equivalent sole-crop biomass.
  • New maize parameter set (corn_plt.xml), together with its calibration documentation.
  • New output variables, including balance variables and variables related to height and radiation.
  • Server mode: STICS can be driven by another program through a JSON-RPC API (stics --server), for example to change irrigation or fertilisation during a simulation.
  • Evaluation reports for v11, included in the release archive.
  • Many bug fixes, especially for chained USMs and perennial crops.

Important: input file compatibility

v10 input files must be updated for v11 by adding the following new parameters:

  • general parameters (param_gen.xml): hauteur_threshold, par_to_net;
  • plant files (*_plt.xml): code_shape, haut_dev_x0, haut_dev_k, nw_height, stage_const_height, elongation;
  • crop management files (*_tec.xml): code_strip, nrow.

The examples shipped with JavaSTICS are already up to date, and the new parameters are detailed in the full release notes.

Functions for updating files from v10 to v11 are available in the R package SticsRFiles (https://github.com/SticsRPacks/SticsRFiles; see use examples here https://github.com/SticsRPacks/SticsRFiles)
